How I Hit My #1 Goal

Hello readers and fellow Praxians!

The Capstone was the Praxis program’s final phase, where we set goals and pursued projects to achieve them.

My Goals

Near the end of February, I filled out a template outlining what I wanted to accomplish by the end of the program. My #1 goal?

Land a paid marketing position.

Beyond that, I had a few professional goals to ensure I continued improving. These were:

  • Learn hard skills/tools relevant to marketing

  • Build my network and connect with more professionals

  • Choose a marketing niche and complete projects within it

These goals were designed to move my career forward and boost my confidence in my knowledge and skills as a marketer.

Additionally, I set three personal goals to work on during this final phase:

  • Create a new piece of art weekly

  • Continue to publish written content (LinkedIn, Substack, etc.)

  • Stick to a new workout routine

One thing I’ve always appreciated about Praxis is its emphasis on the power of good habits. The goal is to build the life you want, not just the career.

My Plan for Accomplishing these Goals

The Capstone lasted 12 weeks. So, what exactly did I plan to do to reach these goals? Let’s start with the first one: landing a paid marketing position.

The Plan: Submit 8 job applications and 3 customized pitches per week. Customized pitches aren’t just tailored résumés—they’re value-driven projects like video pitches, landing pages, or other content that shows how my skills can provide value to a specific company.

Professional Goals:

  • Learn hard skills/tools relevant to marketing:

    • Weeks 1–2: Take an SEO course

    • Weeks 3–5: Learn Meta ads, A/B testing, and Figma design

  • Build my network and connect with more professionals:

    • Add 50 new LinkedIn connections

    • Have 3 conversations per week (video calls, phone calls, or LinkedIn messaging)

  • Choose a marketing niche and complete projects within it:

    • For my Meta ads project, I went beyond just learning the tools—I actually created and published ads for a business. This taught me a lot about social media advertising and content creation.

Personal Goals:

  • Create a new piece of art weekly: Use this newsletter for accountability

  • Continue publishing written content: Weekly Substack and LinkedIn posts to improve my writing, document progress, and reflect

  • Stick to a new workout routine: Follow a written plan with weekly tasks to build better habits

My Results

In Week 7, I finally saw results—I received an offer from OpenEd to join their marketing team!

From that point on, my other goals took a back seat. It’s important to set priorities during intense moments, but it’s equally important to make sure you're prioritizing the right things.

OpenEd is still my top priority (at the moment), as there’s so much I want to learn and accomplish. That said, I’ve started revisiting some of my other goals. Many of my professional goals now happen naturally at OpenEd, but I want to continue being intentional about networking. I’ve worked hard to build relationships—now it’s time to maintain them and keep making new connections.

Almost ALL opportunities come from your network.

While my personal goals were briefly paused, I’ve realized that strong personal habits give me more long-term energy for work.

What I learned

I learned a lot throughout the Capstone journey, but here are a few standout lessons:

  • Keep growing—you never know what you’ll use: You never know which connections or skills will serve you later. Both proved true in landing my current role.

  • Write down your Why: When the purpose behind a habit or goal is clear, it’s easier to stick with it. Writing it down makes it intentional and easier to revisit. It also reveals when something lacks purpose.

  • Keep checking in: Regularly check in with yourself. Where are your current priorities taking you? If your path isn’t aligned with where you want to go, or if your destination has changed, switch paths.
